Foods For Skin
For the most part of my life I have fooled most people about my age. They think I am a lot younger than I really am. Now I really hope that didn’t come out too cocky, or that I was patting myself on the back, I just wanted it to lead into what this topic is about.
When I tell people my age they always tell me what’s your secret? What skin products are you taking? You must have a good gene pool. I always tell them I have no secret, I don’t use any skin products and I don’t know about my genes as I am not a geneticist. All I do is eat right and exercise on a regular basis. And that quite frankly is the truth! Those two simple “tricks” are my keys to staying young looking. But this topic is about food that will help your skin keep looking young.
Before I begin I do need to say one thing about genes. Now while I am not a geneticist and I do not claim to be one I do know one thing your genes are “programmed” for change if they weren’t we wouldn’t be able to live in some of the harsher places of this world and we would be limited to live between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Topic of Cancer anything further north of the Tropic of Cancer, or south of the Tropic of Capricorn would be inhospitable for us and we would surely perish. But thanks to our genes ability to adapt we can even live in the most inhabitable places this world can offer.
But what does that mean when it comes to food and living longer? Well that is simple really. It means that because our genes can change we can reprogram them. The mega food companies know this and they capitalize on it, the problem with that is that they do it rapidly that our genes don’t have the chance to adapt. I remember reading in “The Primal Blueprint” by Mark Sisson that our genes have not changed that much from our cave dwelling ancestors and that between the years of 2007 and 2008 the USFDA have introduced 299 different types of foods. Why is that important? Well according to Mark Sisson’s research our genetic structure allows us to adapt to 1 new food in 100 years to make it beneficial for our wellbeing.
Now before I go completely off topic let’s look at what 3 foods can help us look and feel better.
1. High carotene foods. Foods like carrots are and excellent source of beta-carotene that helps your skin keep those wrinkles at bay. How? Well beta-carotene turns into Vitamin A which acts as an antioxidant and in turn reduces oxygen damage caused by UV light. So, grab that carrot once a day and chomp away.
2. Foods with high Omega-3 fatty acid. Foods like wild salmon 2 or 3 times a week can drastically help you keep those wrinkles from getting deeper and longer. Why? Aside from the super powerful cancer fighting skills of Omega-3 it can strengthen cell membranes which in turn helps them last longer. Longer, stronger cell membranes mean longer, stronger cells which in turn helps you last longer in life and looking younger in turn.
3. Foods with cocoa flavanols. Now comes the fun part, and one of my favorites. Raw Chocolate. Yes, you read right. Chocolate can make you live longer and look younger. Why? Again, Raw Chocolate is an antioxidant that helps with fighting off those nasty UV Rays that the sun hits us with, but wait there’s more! The flavonoids and flavanols that is in cacao gives us that extra protecting from these UV Rays and really mitigates the risk of photo aging. Plus, the fact that it is chocolate and who really doesn’t like chocolate. I mean come on! Tastes good and helps me looking like I’m in my 30’s when I’m in my 40’s! I’m sold.
Well there you have it. That is only 3 foods of so many foods that are super rich in antioxidants that will help you stay looking as young as possible. I’ll give you guys a little tid bit that I do after every workout. I take a bowl of frozen berries and sprinkle a table spoon of raw chocolate nibs and eat it within a half hour after my workouts. Why? Well aside from the antioxidant powerhouse berries and chocolate have it helps boost testosterone production in a natural way which helps your muscles recover a bit quicker.
